Opioid addiction is an epidemic that affects millions of Americans each year. In the US, drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death, and opioid addiction plays a big part in this staggering statistic. In 2015 alone, over 30,000 people overdosed on prescription painkillers or heroin.
Addiction is a complex disease that affects not only the person addicted, but their support system of friends, family, and loved ones as well. Overcoming opioid addiction is possible! There are a few treatment options for opioid dependence. Medication assisted treatment (MAT), a combination of counseling or behavioral therapy with the use of specialized, specific addiction medication, is one of the safest and most effective ways to recover from addictive substance use.
TTHI Counseling Center is now able to provide treatment for opioid abuse free of cost to under-insured or uninsured patients.
“The Transition House has been helping the community with substance abuse and mental health diagnoses for more than 24 years. As a recipient of funding from Alkermes, the Florida Behavioral Health Association and the Florida Legislature, we are able to offer Vivitrol™ medication, in combination with counseling, for the most under-served population – under-insured or uninsured residents at no cost to the recipient,” said Thomas Griffin, CEO for The Transition House, Inc.
The protocol for medication assisted treatment (MAT) includes a substance use evaluation, medical and laboratory services, administration of Vivitrol™, and continuing counseling services and medical follow-ups.
“Opioids, including prescription medications, are highly addictive and have been officially named an epidemic here in the U.S. and Florida,” said Griffin. “However, using a combination of medication and counseling to treat the disease of substance abuse, recovery from this disease is greatly improved.”
