Do your research
Choosing the right therapist has a lot to do with their professional experience. Depending on the reason you’re attending counseling, you should look for a therapist who specializes in the area in which you are seeking help. Experience within specialized fields will only benefit you, rather than choosing one who has no experience with your issue. For certain problems, like PTSD, experience and training is a necessity.
Reach out to friends and family
Chances are a loved one or friend has probably attended counseling at some point in their lives. It’s helpful to reach out to those who have or are still going to counseling and ask about their experience with their counselor. Ask them what qualities they like most about their counselor. From this information, make a list of qualities that are important to you in your own counselor.
Schedule an initial phone call
Talking to a counselor over the phone before coming in for your first session can give you an idea of how you and your counselor might click. Pay attention to your gut and make sure to go into your conversation with an open mind. Get to know the counselor and ask him or her about their counseling style and experience. If the connection doesn't feel right, don’t force it. A good counselor will make you feel welcomed and respected.
